Pondicherry Science Forum (PSF), Pondicherry

website: http://psfcerd.org/blog/

Pondicherry Science Forum (PSF) was founded in 1985. PSF believes that science placed before humanity tools which transform society, tools that banish poverty, disease and social backwardness. But for it to be used for such purposes, awareness of potential of science and technology, and a scientific temperament should become an integral part of the life process of the people. It describes itself as “a non profit, voluntary, public-interest organization” which is based in Puducherry, India. It works primarily on issues related to science policy and science popularization.

In 1989, PSF initiated and supported the Directorate of Education of the Government of Pondicherry in launching the total literacy programme called Puduvai Arivoli Iyakkam (Movement for light of knowledge) Pondicherry which later won the prestigious UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize for the best Literacy Programme in 1992 for its content, delivery and concept.

In 1994, PSF was awarded the National Award for the Best Science Communication programmes by the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.

PSF/CERD was also given an award for its work in renewable energy sources by the Renewable Energy Agency, Govt of Puducherry (REAP).

Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP), Kerala

website: https://www.kssp.org/

Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad is a People’s Science Movement of Kerala, India. Founded in 1962. It started it’s works at the science society interface with about 40 members as an organisation of science writers in Malayalam. Over the past four decades it has grown into a mass movement with a membership over 40000, distributed in more than two thousand units spread all over Kerala.

KSSP held that a privileged minority was monopolizing the benefits of science and technology for their own profit at the expense of the majority. KSSP chose as its mission, the challenge of arming the people with the tools of science and technology so that they can reverse this process. Thus in 1972, KSSP decided to become a People’s Science Movement and adopted “Science for Social Revolution” as its motto. The KSSP is involved, broadly in three types of activities: educative, agitate, and constructive, in areas like environment, health, education, energy, literacy, micro planning and development in general.

One of the awards received is Right Livelihood Award 1996 (often called ‘Alternative Nobel prize’) by right livelihood Award foundation (Stockholm, Sweden) for its pioneering work in the fields of health, peace development and education.

KSSP is publishing two Monthly magazines, Sastrakeralam (for Secondary School Students) and Sastragathi and a biweekly, Eureka (for Primary School Students). KSSP’s major contribution is in publishing science books in Malayalam, more than 2000 titles already published.

Integrated Rural Technology Centre ( IRTC) has major contributions over various fields in Research & Developmental work. Educational Research Unit (ERU) is another research wing conducting studies in the area of educational policies, curriculum, teaching methods and teaching aids etc.

Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat (KRVP), Karnataka

website: https://www.krvp.org/

As early as 1977, Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) identified a project on “Popularisation of Science”. Prof. M. A. Sethu Rao, the then Joint Secretary of the KSCST initiated the project as its convener. The objectives of the project were two fold:

  •  To bring together several individuals and groups in Karnataka already engaged in tasks of popularisation of Science.

  •  To publish a science monthly in Kannada (Bala Vijnana).

These objectives were fulfilled and Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat (KRVP) was founded in 1980 as an autonomous registered society started with 25 units in the beginning and now it is an organisation of about 79 units, 34 district committees and 653 rural school science centres spread across the length and breadth of Karnataka. Activists and promoters of KRVP include scientists, teachers, administrators, doctors and other professionals.
